A major component of Nicolás Catena's drive to produce world-class wines at
Bodega Catena Zapata has been to assemble the right winegrowing and
winemaking team.
Leading that team are three Argentina's most respected, brilliant and
talented wine industry experts: Winery and Vineyard Director Alejandro
Sejanovich, Winery Quality Director José Galante and Chief Winemaker
Alejandro Vigil.
Alejandro Sejanovich is a valedictorian graduate of Facultad de Ciencias
Agrarias of the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Mendoza, Argentina with a
degree in Agricultural Engineering, specializing in Vineyard Management. He
also has a masters degree in Vineyard Management and Winemaking from the
prestigious Ecole National Supérieure Agronomique de Montpellier in 1994.
Alejandro is considered one of the foremost Argentine authorities on Malbec
cultivation in Mendoza, as well as irrigation regimes and the important
effects of altitude on high quality grape cultivation. His scientific
approach to grape growing has lead to numerous advances in the development
of world class vineyard sites for Bodega Catena Zapata.
José Galante is graduated from the Facultad Tecnologica de Enologia,
Universidad Juan Augustin Maza. José has maintained strong ties to the
academic community and over the past ten years has been a leading professor
of winemaking at the university.
His philosophy is that the winemaker's role is to preserve the fruit's full
spectrum of flavors and aromas by the most gentle and natural handling of
the wines.
Alejandro Vigil is a graduate in Agricultural Engineering from Facultad de
Ciencias Agrarias of the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Mendoza, where he
went on to receive a Masters degree in both Winemaking and Irrigation
Management, as well as a Master Course in Microclimate Definition and the Affect on
Wine. He began his career in the INTA, the National Agricultural Technology
Institute, where he quickly became a bright young star, taking over the Soil
Analysis Department at the age of 28. Alejandro came to Bodega Catena Zapata
in 2002 as head of Research & Development.
Beginning 2003 he joins the enology department becoming the manager of the
top products in the winery.
His strong scientific and academic background led to important developments
in both vineyard management and winemaking for the winery. As the results of
his research were increasingly incorporated into the winery’s operations,
Alejandro was named Chief Winemaker in July 2007. A naturally restless
person, Alejandro strives to channel his creative energy into pushing the
limits of conventional viticultural and winemaking wisdom. Always ready to
try something new, full of endless experiments, Alejandro’s goal is to
constantly increase his understanding of the unique terroir in Mendoza’s
high altitude desert oasis.
Assistants winemakers are Felipe Stahlschidt , Daniela Romero and Mariela
Molinari.
